A French Louis style chair upcycled and revived with traditional upholstery skills and a touch of artistic flair into a unique piece of furniture.
This is not a cheap mass reproduction, this chair came originally from France ( I know the previous owner who has a home in Normandy), hence it’s elegant shape and style. it is a good quality chair with a fully sprung seat. I would say it probably dates from the early 1950s.
I carefully cleaned up the woodwork with natural hemp oil to feed the wood and return the original patina.
I just love it’s ‘Frenchness’, so I decided that only a ticking fabric would work, but to be a little bit different I chose a pale green and ivory combination. I rummaged through my fabric stash and found a vintage piece of green velvet that matched perfectly.
The words ‘asseyez vous, s’il vous plait’ (sit down, if you please) have been machine embroidered onto the velvet. This chair definitely calls for you to sit on it. It has a lovely good sized seat, which I would describe as comfortable, but firm.
The chair is finished off with double piping trim cut on the bias as I just love the way the ticking fabric turns into candy hook stripes – adding a little bit more to what is a totally unique chair that will quietly make a statement in any room.
