Well here we are in September – it will soon be Christmas! (Only joking) ….
Summer was a bit of a late starter this year but as the lovely August weather seems set to continue into the beginning of September it doesn’t feel as if we are on the cusp of autumn.
September is one of my favourite months of the year. For most of my friends it means ‘Back to School’ and all that entails – haircuts, buying new uniforms, trips to the shoe shop, getting the kids back into a routine, but to me September is a transitional month - at the beginning you are still wandering around in flip flops and shorts and as it progresses you can find yourself back in jeans, socks and boots.
A quick wander around the garden and there are clear signs that Autumn is on its way - frilly pink dahlias, ruby like sedum, late flowering fuchsias and the last few showy roses indicate that there is plenty of garden colour yet to come. But look closer and you can see rose hips forming, lots of berries and a slight tinge to some of the leaves on the trees. I have used some of them for my September mood board.
One of the clearest signs for me is the view from my garden over the fields. One minute it’s all golden, then harvest with tractors transporting huge Swiss rolls to and from the farm and the next minute the field is ploughed – a deep brown colour and the cycle starts all over again.
My inspiration for this month’s mood board come from two lovely pieces. The first is a lovely hand worked wool tapestry piece that came off a Victorian antique footstool. I love the colours of the apples, plums and cherries against the contrast of the dark green background. I have plans to turn this into a lovely tapestry cushion with a gold velvet background and of course tassels. Watch this space. Not quite sure how I am going to hide the unfortunate cigarette burn that mars the tapestry – leave that with me…
The second piece is a gorgeous linen fabric; I have no idea who made it as it was given to me. It’s a beautiful sage green with lovely orange roses, fuchsias and chrysanthemums in a splash of autumn colours. It looks fabulous on this little ottoman and the Victorian bedroom chair.
I hope you have a September to Remember - in a good way.
